/* ============================================================
   fonts.css — self-hosted variable webfonts (D90-I2c).

   Replaces the render-blocking <link> to fonts.googleapis.com. That stylesheet cost two
   third-party DNS+TLS handshakes on the critical path BEFORE a single font byte could be
   requested, and it was the largest single lever on LCP (the hero's display-italic question).

   Files are built by scripts/build_fonts.py from the upstream google/fonts variable TTFs
   (OFL-1.1, licence vendored at assets/fonts/OFL.txt). They are real subsets, not mirrors of
   Google's: Google's own `latin` subset omits U+2192 (->) and U+2194 (<->), both of which this
   essay sets mid-sentence ("2019 -> NOW", "2019 <-> 2022"), so those arrows used to fall back
   to a system face. They are included here.

   Variable axes are preserved — charts.css drives `font-variation-settings: "opsz" ...` on
   display text, and weight varies across the UI, so instancing to static cuts was not an option.

   font-display: swap everywhere — the fallback stack in tokens.css (Georgia / system-ui /
   ui-monospace) is metrically close enough that the swap reads as a weight settle, never a
   reflow of the layout.
